THE HISTORY OF WINE
Elegant, sumptuous, balanced, undoubtedly the king of the native red berried vines of Sicily, Nero D'avola was called Calabrese until a few years ago.
Although its presence in Sicily has been documented since ancient times, it was most probably imported by the Phoenicians, the first written sources that speak of this vine date back to the end of the 1500s, and the first scholar to write about it was the botanist Francesco Cupani who referred to the vine with the synonym “Calabrese”. In this regard there are various hypotheses on the origin of the name: some say that it derives its origins from Caluria, an island and a Greek city where the Calauris grape was grown. Others that it is simply the Italianization of the compound word "calaulìsi", formed by the union of "calea" (grape in ancient Sicilian) and "aulìsi" (ie originally from Avola). But the most original leads us to the word "cala-brese" which can be traced back to strictly commercial reasons. In the past, in fact, the exporters of Sicilian wines to France found it easier to sell them as Calabrian wines, which at that time were decidedly more famous and appreciated.
The origins of the Syrah grape variety are rather controversial. Many argue that this vine comes from the areas of ancient Persia, especially from the city of Schiraz, from which it takes its name. Another legend has it that it derives instead from Syracousai (ancient city of Syracuse), when the then Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius Probus wanted to import local vines directly from Egypt to Gaul, but the vine was instead planted along the way, precisely in the Sicilian city.
A final hypothesis, later, gives it to southern France in the thirteenth century, in the Tain-l'Hermitage area (Rhône-Alpes), but still imported from the Near East by the Crusaders and, in particular, by the Templar knight Henri Gaspard de Sterinberg.
The first evidence of Syrah in Italy dates back to 1828, thanks to the Mantuan Acerbi, one of the most important Italian ampelographers. At the end of the 19th century Syrah was present in almost all Italian regions.
